Hotelli: Vastaanotto - Hotel: The reception

Ensimmäinen kerros

Pientä mallinnusta siitä, miltä alimmainen kerros näyttäisi. Oikealla olisi vastaanotto ja vasempaan nurkkaan suunnittelin matalaan portaikkoa, mikä johtaisi hissille.

I was making plans on how the first floor would look. The reception will be located on the right and a very low staircase on the left corner leading to an elevator.

Portaikko maalattuna. / The low staircase is painted.

Hiljaa hyvää tulee... - Getting there...

The first floor of my hotel has given me a bit of a headache but now it's moving along a little bit - finally. What are the odd looking pink bumps on the floor? It's glitter and looks much better in real life than in the photo. This is the hotel's street level floor where there will be a reception and a small sitting area for guests.

Uudet kutistemuoviseikkailut - New adventures with shrink plastic

I'm starting to believe that shrink plastic and I don't get along. This time around experimenting took place during our club meeting. I chose a transparent sheet of plastic and used my already existing motifs, thinking I could improve. It wasn't until all my work was in the oven that all of us realized that the plastic had an extra protective cover sheet which should've been removed before use. Oh dear.

Some of the end results turned out a bit like frosted glass, which looked nice but on one of them (far left) the protective cover peeled off entirely. This time, though, my work didn't shrivel up into an incomprehensible lump like usual, see the first time use of shrink plastic. Some positive progress going on.

Hotellin aulan lattiamietteitä - Thinking about the foyer floor in the hotel

Lisäys: Lattian liimaaminen meni ihan pipariksi. Täytyy keksiä toinen ratkaisu.
Edit: This didn't work out at all. The glue spoiled the whole thing. I have to come up with another solution.

Kumpi lattia hotellin aulaan? / Which floor to use in the hotel foyer?

Lattiaveihtoehto-1

Marmorityylisessä lattiassa on puolensa. / The marble-look-a-like floor has its advantages.

Lattiavaihtoehto-2

Tämä puolestaan sopisi hyvin Art Deco -tyyliin selkeytensä takia mutta ehkä on hieman liian valkoinen. Toisaalta, kun aulaan sijoittaa huonekaluja, iso osa lattiasta kyllä peittyy. Taidan valita tämän.

This one with its clear geometric style would represent very well Art Deco-style. On one hand, it's a little too white but on the other hand, much of the floor will be covered by furniture anyway. I just might choose this one.

Art Decoa kutistemuovista - Art Deco from shrink plastic

Shrink plastic

I continued to experiment with the shrink plastic and finally raised the oven temperature to 170 Celsius centigrades as per the instructions. Nevertheless, I had to press the pieces flat to straigthen them out. This time they turned out OK.

Kutistemuovikokeiluja - Experimenting with shrink plastic

Olen kokeillut kutistemuovin käyttöä aikaisemmin, huonoin tuloksin.

Ehkä 150 oC on liian korkea lämpötila. Ei kai auta muu kuin jatkaa kokeiluja.

Toisaalta nämä onnistuivat jo huomattavasti paremmin kuin ihan ensimmäisellä kerralla.

I've used shrink plastic last year with no luck at all. This time I was trying to make a coffee table top (on the far left), a window (on the right), and a cutting board - all for my Art Deco-hotel. The only one that turned out OK was the cutting board.

The table top was left with humps and bumps on the right side despite my efforts of straightening it. Also, the window turned out more like a bowl than a window. Only the cutting board turned out as it should.

I baked all of them in 150 oC although the instructions said to use a temperature of 170 oC. Why did I use a lower than recommended temperature? This was advice given to me by my fellow hobbyists. Maybe even the 150 oC was too  high. Sigh. I'll just have to keep on trying until I'll get it right.

Anyway, these items turned out a lot better than the very first time when I used shrink plastic.

Hotelli: Vastaanottotiski - Hotel: Reception desk

Valmistusaineet vastaanoton tiskiin

Tarvitaan pieni pahvipakkaus, balsaa, vaneria, akryylimaalia, kultapaperia ja ääriviivatarraa. Voilà! Siitä syntyy hotellin vastaanottotiski Art Deco -tyyliin.

You need a small cardboard box, balsa wood, plywood, acrylic paint, gold colored paper and peel-off sticker. Voilà! And this all is converted into an Art Deco -style reception desk.

Hotelli: Pohjamaalattu - Hotel: Primer done

Pohjamaalaaminen on mielestäni tylsin vaihe nukkekodin rakentamisessa mutta pitäähän se tehdä, jotta lopputuloksesta tulee jotakuinkin hyvä. Vielä riittää pientä paikkaamista vaikka mieluummin keskittyisin sisustamiseen. Tämä on siis se uusi nukkekoti, josta on tarkoitus tehdä Art Deco -tyylinen hotelli.

Coating the new dolls' house with a primer is really quite tedious and boring but it must be done for a decent finish. This is the hotel that I'm planning to do in Art Deco-style. I'm almost done with the initial work. I can't wait to start decorating it.

Jouluna aloin rakentamaan Art Deco -tyylistä hyllykköä. Tässä se on vasta työn alla, pohjamaalattuna.
At Christmas I started to construct an Art Deco-style display cabinet. Here it is under work with a first coat of white primer.

Levoton matto - Restless rug

Art Deco -tyylin matto
Opettelimme uutta tekniikka kerhoillassa Päivi Eerolan ohjauksessa. Yritin saada aikaan Art Deco -tyylin mattoa mutta tästä tuli melko levoton. Voisi sopia valkoiseen huoneeseen, jossa on vain valkoisia huonekaluja.

We had the privilege of learning a new technique at our previous club meeting. Ms Eerola from Peony and Parakeet was teaching us. I was trying to make an Art Deco-style area rug but what I ended up with was a rather restless and too colorful piece. It might suit well in an all-white room; walls painted in white and furnished with only white furniture.

Turusta tarttunutta - An Art Deco -style rug

Art Deco -matto

Kunhan saan rintamamiestalon valmiiksi, aloitan jo pitkään suunnittelemaani Art Deco -tyylistä hotellia. Tavalliseen tapaani keräilen ja teen pikku hiljaa ensin tavaroita sinne...

As soon as I will finish the house in scale 1:18, I will start working on an Art Deco -style hotel. And as usual, I'm collecting and making items for it already now...

Hylly ja pöytä - A shelf and table

Hylly ja pöytä
Originally uploaded by Millimari

Hyllystä tuli Art Deco -tyylinen kylpyhuoneen hylly; parfyymit ovat rekvisiittaa. Koristelista jäi yli, joten tein siitä pikkupöydän rintamamiestaloa varten.
The shelf I was talking about in my second previous post turned into an Art Deco -style bathroom shelf and the ornamental molding left over from the shelf became a small table.
At the same time I welcome two new readers to my blog, Tiina and Rocio!

Saisiko tästä Art Deco -tyylisen hyllyn? - Could this become an Art Deco -style shelf?

Kerhossa tehtiin hyllyjä. Kesken työn sain ajatuksen muuntaa omani Art Deco -tyyliseksi, joten se jäi kesken toistaiseksi. Muut saivat aikaan näin hienoja hyllyjä parfyymipulloineen.

At the club meeting we made some shelves. While working with mine I got an idea to turn it into Art Deco -style so it's unfinished for the time being whereas others made these beautiful pieces.

Rankan päivän jälkeen - After hard day's work

Art Deco maistiaisia

Kipinäsuoja on ostettu Lahden nukkekotimessuilta muutama vuosi sitten.
Napsauta hiirellä kuvan päällä niin näet suuremman version.
Marie is relaxing after hard day's work. Running a respectable hotel is tiring: she needs to prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner and there must be
some snacks available throughout the day. After the sudden death of Marie's husband, she had to convert her home into a hotel for financial reasons.
The fireplace, table and chair are made by me, Marie's outfit is made by Lissu and the footstool by Raili. As for the Tiffany fire screen, I bought it at the Lahti dolls' house
fair a few years back.

Art Deco -tyylinen klubituoli - Art Deco Style Club Chair

Art Deco -tyylinen klubituoli

Ensimmäinen kappale tehty. Ihan käyttökelpoinen huonekalu johonkin nurkkaan tulevassa Art Deco -hotellissani.

My very first attempt to make this type of a chair. I still need more practise but this piece is OK for use in my future Art Deco style hotel.
